Who Will Be Invited for a Mammogram?
As part of a free service under the NHS Cancer Screening Programme, women between the ages of 50 and 64 will be routinely invited for breast screening every 3 years.
When Will You Receive Your First Invite?
Because the Programme is a rolling one, which invites women from GP practices in turn, not every woman will receive an invitation as soon as she is 50. But she will receive her first invitation before her 53rd birthday. Once women reach the upper age limit for routine invitations for breast screening, they are encouraged to make their own appointment.
If you are concerned about a specific breast problem e.g. a new breast lump, or you have a strong history of breast cancer in the family, then you should speak to one of the doctors in the surgery who will refer you to the appropriate service for further tests. This is not part of the NHS Breast Screening Programme, which uses a routine call and recall system to invite well women.
